INGREDIENT TO KNOW: ROSE
06 May 2019

At ELEMIS we are proud to sit at the forefront of beauty innovations – from the Padina Pavonica algae in our iconic Pro-Collagen Marine Cream to the pollution-shielding Enviro-Age Complex in our new Daily Defence Shield SPF 30 , we’ve broken new ground with many a product.

However, that’s not to say that we don’t celebrate the simple appeal of some of the beauty world’s oldest ingredients. Sometimes, a brilliant product needs little more than a natural skin-nourishing extract, which is why we’ve chosen to celebrate the beauty of the rose in our Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm.

But firstly, why rose?

This aromatic flower is a beauty ingredient steeped in history. The Ancient Greeks would use the petals to perfume baths, while the Ancient Egyptians boiled whole roses to create beauty balms enriched with healing properties. Distilled roses are said to have been incorporated within the earliest cosmetics, medicines and therapeutic treatments.

Fast-forward to the late 1800s, and the rose began to be utilised in mainstream beauty. Rose-infused perfumes, lotions, soaps and creams became readily available, and have remained so ever since.

We all recognise the soul-soothing properties of the rose’s powdery fragrance, but what can this humble flower do for our skin? Turns out, the beauty benefits of rose are manifold - reputed to deliver deep hydration to soothe the appearance of redness.

“Rose is ideal for all skin types, providing the skin with nourishment and hydration” explains Noella Gabriel, ELEMIS co-founder. “At ELEMIS we use rose absolute, rose essential oil and rose waxes to help to calm a sensitive, high coloured, irritated skin as well as balance and hydrate an oilier, combination skin. These natural extracts leave skin nourished and conditioned.”

A truly multi-faceted skincare ingredient, several different extracts may be produced from the rose. Each extract offers different benefits to the skin, which is why we utilise every part of this precious flower in our Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm.

First up is Rosehip Seed Oil. This oil is rich in essential fatty acids that nourish the skin’s lipid barrier while delivering a soothing hit of hydration – the perfect base for such an intensely nourishing cleanser.

Rose Flower Wax is produced from the petals of the rose. It is renowned for its skin-softening properties, so is perfect for melting the day’s make-up and grime away.

Produced exclusively for ELEMIS, English Rose Oleo Extract is perhaps the star of the show. Derived from rose petals grown in the UK, this powerful ingredient makes an excellent emollient, working to soothe and nourish even the driest of skin.

And finally, this heavenly blend wouldn’t be complete without the heady, aromatic fragrance we all associate with this beautiful bloom. Rose Damascena Flower contains both the Essential Oil and Absolute of the flower, resulting in a nostalgic floral aroma with a grounding woody base.
