Welcome to the ELEMIS Cleansing 101.
This year we’re going back to basics and helping you to perfect your skincare routine in four easy steps. It’s not about ridiculous targets, but about achieving great-looking skin through a simply effective routine. So join us and get ready to glow.
It may sound simple, but there’s a fine art to effective skin cleansing. As the first, and arguably most important, step in a skincare routine, it’s vital to get it right. Proper application and removal is essential to allow any cleanser to work effectively. So, where to start? With these therapist tips you’ll be perfectly equipped to cleanse like an expert.
Tip 1. Think clean.
The first one is simple – cleanse with clean hands. By diving straight into a cleansing routine without first cleaning your hands, you risk transferring bacteria and grime from your fingertips straight onto your face. What’s more, if you’re using a balm cleanser you don’t want to allow bacteria to enter the pot, lingering there until the next use. Sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how often we forget.
Tip 2. Perfect your temperature.
It’s vital to use water at the correct temperature when cleansing. Too cold, and you won’t be able to remove excess oil and grime from the pores, but too hot and you’ll risk upsetting the skin barrier, leading to dryness and irritation. What’s more, hot water can dilate the blood vessels near the surface of the skin, leading to redness. Stick to lukewarm water – somewhere just above body temperature – to obtain the best of both worlds.
Tip 3. Master massaging.
If you’re simply slapping on a cleanser before removing it seconds later, you’re missing a trick. Facial massage not only feels heavenly, but can maximise the effectivity of your cleanser too. It needn’t be overly complicated – simple use fingers to apply moderate pressure to the skin, sweeping from the cheeks up to the temples, then from the centre of the chin to the base of the ears and down the sides of the neck. Take care not to pull the skin, and always move in upward motions.
Tip 4. Choose your tools.
Most cleansers work best when removed with a cloth, rather than hands. This is to ensure all the oils and emollients are fully removed from the skin and that there’s no sticky residue left that might hamper proper absorption of the products that follow. Choose a pure cotton or muslin cloth for gentle yet effective removal, and replace it with a fresh one every day.
